Spicy sausage potato and kale soup

I love to go out to eat and then try to deconstruct the flavors of the dishes I order. Then I go home and try to recreate them myself. A popular Italian chain restaurant has a delicious soup made with Italian sausage potatoes and kale. It took some experimenting over the years but I have perfected a similar but in my opinion more flavorful soup!

Place a large soup pot over medium high heat and brown the Italian sausage 8-10 minutes. Remove sausage from pot and set aside. Add the onion and bacon and cook for 3-5 minutes until onions are translucent and bacon has crisped up a bit. Next add the minced garlic and red pepper flakes and cook 1 minute. Add chicken broth and potatoes and bring to a boil, reduce the heat cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the sausage, kale and cream and stir well serve immediately.
Serve with a side salad and some garlic bread if desired.
