Vitamin D & Weight Loss
New discoveries are constantly being made about the health benefits of Vitamin D. So, it’s not a surprise to hear that researchers have discovered a connection between the “sunshine vitamin” and maintaining a healthy weight. Over the last decade, a number of studies have revealed that Vitamin D, which is actually a pro-hormone, plays a role in helping to support and regulate a healthy appetite while suppressing the desire to overeat. It has been shown that individuals suffering from obesity tend to have lower levels of this vitamin circulating in their bloodstream. Furthermore, it’s postulated that low levels of Vitamin D may be one of the underlying contributing factors to the development of excess body weight.
Although different health organizations differ in what they consider to be a sufficient or healthy reference range when it comes to the levels of Vitamin D measured in the blood (typically around 20-30 ng/ml) there are many researchers and experts, including the Vitamin D Council, which feel the optimal levels of Vitamin D in the blood should fall somewhere between 40 and 80 ng/ml. Because many people either use sunblock or simply avoid exposing their skin to the sun during the summer and many more fail to get enough sun exposure during the winter months, Vitamin D deficiency is more common than many other nutrient deficiencies. Supplementing Vitamin D, either in a softgel form or in liquid drops, can be of benefit for those whose levels are considered to be on the lower end.
